After the 2021 JAMB result was released, the TestDriller team embarked on a research to show if private practice truly predicts public performance. The two key questions we asked ourselves are:
1. Is there any significant difference between the average practice score of our app users and their average JAMB score?
2. Is there a strong correlation (or connection) between practice score and JAMB score?
The first step in getting our answers is to collect real data. We randomly sampled 322 candidates from 34 states in Nigeria. These 322 candidates are a tiny subset of users of the TestDriller UTME app. From our web server, we extracted their best UTME challenge scores which represent their practice scores. TestDriller UTME challenge (mock) is designed to mimic the actual JAMB exam. The questions are set from over 20 years of past questions while the structure is exactly like that of JAMB. In each round, the exam duration is the same for all participants. We also collected and verified the JAMB scores of the 322 candidates.
To answer the first question, we calculated the mean practice score (210) of the 322 candidates and the mean JAMB score (214). To show if the apparent difference is statistically significant, we performed a paired t-test (p-value=0.075) which shows that there is no sufficient evidence to claim the difference is significant.
To answer the second question, we computed the correlation (0.71) between JAMB score and Practice score. With a correlation of 71%, there is a strong connection between practice score and actual JAMB score.
In conclusion, the TestDriller team has shown that your best score during any exam practice is a strong indication of what your actual score will become. Practicing exposes your strengths and weaknesses; and it gives you a chance to improve before the D-Day.
