The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has announced the release of results for its first-ever Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) conducted for private candidates earlier this year. This exam, the first series for private candidates in 2023, was held at 140 CBT centres across the country, with a total of 8,139 candidates (3,862 males and 4,277 females) participating, including 21 persons with disabilities.
Of the total candidates, only 2,519 (30.95%) obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, which are mandatory for university admissions. Out of these, 1,286 were males (51.05%) and 1,233 were females (48.95%). This indicates a marginal increase of 6.96% in performance compared to the same diet in previous years.
The Head of National Office of WAEC Nigeria, Dr. Amos Dangut, revealed these statistics in a statement provided by the organization's spokesperson, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, on Friday. He further explained that 8,006 candidates (98.37%) had their results fully processed and released, while 133 candidates (1.63%) had a few subjects still being processed due to errors.
Additionally, 65 candidates (0.80%) had their results withheld for alleged malpractice during the exam, compared to 413 candidates (4.95%) in the same diet last year, indicating a significant reduction in malpractice incidents due to the use of CBT mode. Investigations into these cases are ongoing, and affected candidates will be informed of the findings and final conclusions.
Candidates whose results have been released are advised to check their status on www.waecdirect.org before accessing their digital certificates on the Digital Certificate platform (www.waec.org). For printing hard copies of their certificates, candidates can apply online through the WAEC Certificate Request Portal (e-Certman) at https://certrequest.waec.ng/.
Dr. Dangut expressed gratitude to all those involved in the conduct and marking of the exam, as well as to relevant institutions, agencies, and security agencies for their support.
