ASUU Set To Review Pact With Government
The academic staff union ASUU recently decided to review its agreement with the federal government as regards the pledge
made to ASUU. The union president further sent a message across to all campuses to be at ease an not engage in any form of protest. While on the other hand the union is planning to hold it National Executive Council meeting this week to review the memorandum off action it signed with the Federal Government before it calling off its strike some months ago. The memorandum agreed upon stated that the federal government and the union would have its agreement contents implemented by October 2017 An agreement with the federal government is yet to focus on especially the issuance of license for the registration of Nigerian University Pension Company (NUPEMCO). FG had promised to implement the issuance of license to the company within two weeks of ASUU suspending its strike. It has been gathered that the Federal Government defaulted in its payment of earned academic allowances and revitalization funds for public universities. while discussing on the issue some said it is unfortunate that the Nigerian government is yet to redeem its pledge. Suggestions are being made that in any attempt that a strike commences there wont be a holding back until the Federal government does his part of the bargain. Also, in a swift reaction, ASUU's president, Biodum Ogunyemi, called on calm over the unpaid allowance. It was earlier reported that the union had on Monday, September 18, announced a conditional suspension of its strike action. The union while calling off the strike said it was suspending it till October for the federal government to fulfill its pledges. This decision by ASUU was reached after a delegation of the federal government led by the minister of labor and employment, Chris Ngige, had a meeting with the leadership of the union
