BREAKING: ASUU Issues New Strike Notice, Reveals Details

Aug 21, 2024  University

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has informed the federal government that its members will begin a nationwide strike in 21 days. This decision was announced following the union's National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Ibadan on Monday, August 19.

ASUU to Issue Strike Notice to Relevant Ministries

The union will also send a copy of the strike notice to the federal ministries of labour and education. ASUU stated that this notice complies with the requirements of labor law. The strike threat stems from the government's failure to implement agreements previously reached with the union. In an attempt to prevent the strike, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, had invited ASUU to a meeting to address the issues.

Reasons Behind ASUU's Planned Strike

According to ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the agreements discussed during the meeting have yet to be fulfilled. ASUU’s demands include the implementation of the 2009 re-negotiated agreements, payment of outstanding academic allowances, and revitalization of university funding. Additionally, the government has not addressed the proliferation of new universities without ensuring adequate funding to operate them. If these demands are not met, the strike is expected to commence after the 21-day notice period.
