The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has clarified that it does not object to the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) from embarking on a one-week warning strike. ASUU stated that all unions within the university system have the right to take such action if they deem it necessary.
In an exclusive interview with the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday night, the National President of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, addressed the issue. He mentioned that while ASUU would have preferred not to comment on SSANU and NASU's decision to go on strike, it is not ideal for one union to use another union's actions as a justification for its strike or demands from employers.
Osodeke emphasized that each union should negotiate separately based on its own convictions and not on what other unions receive. He clarified that ASUU had been owed seven and a half months' salaries, not four months as mentioned by other unions. He reiterated that SSANU and NASU, as well as any other union, have the right to withdraw their services to press for their demands.
However, Osodeke also stated that ASUU members would continue their work as they are not on strike. He advised the Federal Government to clear all backlog of withheld salaries for university workers across all unions and meet other needs to prevent further disruptions in the universities.
Osodeke concluded by emphasizing that the government should address the issues promptly to ensure a non-interrupted university system.
